2011 travel
I’ve just used a very useful tool called TravellersPoint to capture all the journeys (both abroad and in the UK) I made during 2011.
It’s not surprising to see how much these journeys cluster around London (below), although from the above map there are a few trips which took me to Scotland, Wales and the North of England. The few trips which did take me northwards were related to my climate change work. Also, I obviously need to visit the South coast a lot more.
Most of these journeys represent meetings I’ve been to during my climate change work for theĀ UK Youth Climate Coalition.
I’m proud to say that almost all of these journeys are by train, and I even used coach to get across to Bonn.
The only flight I took (although it was a big one) was out to India.
There are four quite substantial trips that I took.
In March I travelled to India and spent most of the time in New Delhi, but did get a chance to visit the South of the country.
In June I was lucky enough to attend a United Nations interim climate conference in Germany. This was as part of my work for the UK Youth Climate Coalition’s Youth Delegation project.
In August I went up to Edinburgh for a UK Youth Climate Coalition meeting, and in December I went to Scotland again, this time for a trip to the Western Isles with a close friend.
It’s safe to say that over the past 12 months I’ve come to love train travel. I now accept delays as a necessary part of a certain percentage of journeys. But I find quite some pleasure in the thrill of setting off with just a few belongings, doing minimal damage to the environment compared to road travel, and meeting up with people I care about or work with. I’ve also rediscovered my love of birdwatching from trains.
